Hello everyone my name is Vic and I fell in love with Domes about 10 years ago. I would have dreams about all kinds of domes for years. So I finally called my mother and she said our ancestors lived in domes. We’re Chumash Indian from the central coast in California. Like someone mentioned below the itch for a dome is only getting stronger. I really like the idea of an earthen home like hyper Adobe and super adobe but I’m in my mid 40s and the labor would be too much on my body to be able to do that at this age, I really like the idea of a hempcrete monolithic dome because of how fast the construction process is, durability, and how beautiful the homes are. Has anyone here gone through the entire process of buying land, permits w/county, loans for the build, dealing with contractors. I’m in California so that’s a good thing and a bad thing.
Everything I’ve read about a Monolithic dome is about using shotcrete (concrete) on the inside of the spray foam. The shotcrete is called that because it is “shot” out of a nozzle to cover the inside. It isn’t a hand application process.
You can check out the whole process at http://monolithic.com
We have just built a dome just outside of Savannah Georgia. Once we found the land, it took two years to get our permits. The county had no idea what it was and kept turning us down. After we convinced them how economical and safe it was they gave us the permit with the caveat that we have a third party engineer on hand as we sprayed the concrete as they had no idea how to inspect it. After we started, it took almost three years since I was my own general contractor and did built most of it myself. We have been living in it for over a year now and still have tons of work to do. We both love it, and have lot of looks loos all the time. They usually end up in a couple dome tours each week. If you are ever on the other coast, shoot me a text and we will set something up.
We’ve been to Savannah, walked on the streets (very carefully!) Even had a ghost tour (no ghost!
)
Please post a bunch of photos of your build and indoors around your home. I’ll never get back out that way, but a photo tour and your explanation of how you got through the construction process would be the best way for most of us to see your home.
Start a “New Topic” and choose "Domes in the Wild” for the category. We’d really like to see it all.
When you do get time for photos, try some of these suggestions.
Photo Suggestions (click here)
- Wait for a good sunny day.
- Pick a day close after your yard work day.
- Accentuate the positive; deemphasize the negative.
- Use mapping software to include a street-view drone-looking screen capture.
- Edit/blur any direct location information in the photo including the location that cameras add. Don’t forget the license plates on cars, too.
I think your house has a lot of curb appeal! What a pretty spot. Any photos of the interior?
